Philosophy of Technology Enhanced Learning :: European Research Team
Philosophy in Practice
Despite the name of this European Research Team,
our aim is essentially practical: to produce understanding of the significance
which new technologies have for knowledge and learning, so as to enable us
better to steer these towards benefit in the e-society. We look at the use of
technology in formal education, but also a broader conception of information
technology - a world in which computers are increasingly invisible. We also take
a broad view of learning - a world in which learning is informal and mobile and
happens at work and leisure as well as at school.
Step Back
Take a step back: You are reading this on a computer screen.
Where is the computer itself? Is it under the desk, is it on your lap, in your
palm, or somewhere else altogether? What is the context of your reading this?
Are you at work, at home, on the bus? Computers are so familiar to us that we
take a lot for granted when using them. As they become increasingly invisible
and woven into our lives, it is increasingly important to understand how we use
them - to examine the assumptions we make when designing, carrying, and using
them.
